This beautiful area in North Brabant is home to all sorts of unique plants and animals. Thanks to the support of our donors, we were able to plant 131,222 new trees there last winter. This will create a biodiverse and climate-proof loam forest where nature can develop further. Some willows are already <strong>over 2 metres tall<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<i>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"  viewBox=\"0 0 48 48\" width=\"24px\" height=\"24px\"><path fill=\"#3A4147\" d=\"M44,24c0,11.045-8.955,20-20,20S4,35.045,4,24S12.955,4,24,4S44,12.955,44,24z\"\/><path fill=\"#FFFFFF\" d=\"M34.586,14.586l-13.57,13.586l-5.602-5.586l-2.828,2.828l8.434,8.414l16.395-16.414L34.586,14.586z\"\/><\/svg>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\n\t\t\t\t\t<span><p>The new forest is already teeming with<strong> wildlife<\/strong>, including beavers, white-tailed eagles, honey buzzards and woodcocks.<\/p>\n<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-g2p-wrapper\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-10 col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">New loam forests in North Brabant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dutch loam forests are known as the \u2018treasure trove of biodiversity\u2019. Thanks to their damp soil, they support a <strong>wide variety of plant and animal life<\/strong>. They also play a very important role in the battle against climate change and increasing drought, as they retain a lot of water and sequester carbon. Loam forests are scarce in the Netherlands, so it\u2019s important to protect and expand them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re doing so in <a href=\"https:\/\/treesforall.wptest.go2people.nl\/en\/projecten\/het-groene-woud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Het Groene Woud<\/a> by planting <strong>new forests<\/strong> on former agricultural land, in partnership with ARK. They include the English oak, alder buckthorn, black poplar, blackthorn and goat willow. All these species are indigenous to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This variety is extremely important. If one species suffers from extreme weather conditions, for example, or from a disease, then the other trees ensure that the forest as a whole remains intact. Moreover, a <strong>varied forest <\/strong>attracts more living things, ranging from birds and insects to mammals and fungi. That\u2019s good for biodiversity and for a healthy forest that can take knocks both now and in the future!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One special species of tree we\u2019ve planted is <strong>the European white elm<\/strong>. Whilst this distinctive tree is completely at home in this region, there were only around 25 mature elms left in Het Groene Woud. Thanks to your support, many young saplings have now been added \u2013 and with great success. Some willows have already grown 1.5 metres!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-g2p-wrapper\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-10 col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">This is how the trees are doing now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The other trees are developing really well too. Like the European white elms, the black poplars have also grown almost half a metre already. The willows are shooting up, and some have <strong>grown 1.5 metres<\/strong>! The first berries have appeared on the alder buckthorn and the birds are eating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019re planting trees on<strong> loam soil<\/strong>, the trees have hardly suffered from the extremely dry springtime, as this type of soil retains water really well. The new links between natural areas have made it easier for animals to move around, in search of food and congeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beavers, wild cats and even wolves have been spotted already. Various birds are coming to the forest too, such as the honey buzzard, woodcock, raven and reed warbler. And as the reeds are no longer being cut in some places, even the marsh warbler has returned. So not only is the forest growing, but so is the biodiversity.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-g2p-wrapper\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-10 col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Giving space to nature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no coincidence that the forest is attracting so much wildlife. Our partner ARK is<strong> letting nature do its own thing<\/strong> in part, and actually not planting trees in some places. Ditches are being filled in to improve the water retention of the soil. ARK is also putting dead wood down in some places, so that fungi and good bacteria can grow on it.
